Special legislative maneuver would force extension of expired small business relief: here's how it works

I'm taking the lead on employing a rarely-used legislative maneuver, called a discharge petition, to make the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) a priority for Congress.

The PPP has been a bridge for almost 9,500 small businesses in Southwest Washington, and millions across the nation, but it expired on August 8 -- even though it has nearly $135 billion in unspent funds.

If we're successful in gathering the 218 Member signatures needed, the House would then vote on a bill to extend the expired program. Failing to extend it will mean countless businesses will not get the assistance they need to keep their doors open.

NEWS: The Hill: Centrist Democrats 'strongly considering' discharge petition on GOP PPP bill

National Publication, The Hill, is reporting that a number of House Democrat members are "strongly considering" bucking Nancy Pelosi and working with me to help our nation's small businesses.

You better believe I'll keep the pressure going on this effort.

This morning, I spoke in support of assisting Southwest Washington's small businesses on the U.S. House Floor. Click on the video below to watch.

My bill to help protect women, pregnant workers passes House
As a mom who has had three kids while serving in Congress, I understand the balancing act for women who want to remain in the workplace while raising a family, and safeguard their health.

I'm pleased to report that my bill, the bipartisan Pregnant Workers Fairness Act, passed out of the House, and will ensure pregnant workers receive reasonable accommodations at work, like a bottle of water, an extra bathroom break, or even a stool to sit on.

Watch my video below discussing the passage of the bill.
