As Southwest Washington's representative in Congress, I want to keep you up-to-date on my work to improve life in our region. For timely updates, please be sure to follow me on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
After nearly a year out of the classroom, parents and students have reached a breaking point. The CDC says schools should be the last to close and first to open. I'm supporting its science-based guidance that says we can fully reopen schools and remain safe. Click here to read my recent editorial published in full in The Columbian.
Pressing for rural COVID vaccine access
Residents who live in rural Southwest Washington don’t always have easy access to large, chain drugstores to receive a COVID vaccine. That’s why I’m pressing the Biden Administration to make distribution of vaccines to rural pharmacies a higher priority. Click here to read my letter in full to the Biden Administration.
Advocating for Southwest Washington priorities
As your representative in Congress, my job is to advocate for priorities that benefit our communities here in Southwest Washington.
Two recent priorities include working to return taxpayer dollars back to our region to help fund the much-needed expansion of facilities in the Ridgefield Wildlife Institute and conduct sediment monitoring of the Lower Cowlitz River to protect downstream communities from potential flooding.
Ridgefield Wildlife Institute
The Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge receives around 300,000 visitors each year, providing a great economic boost to small businesses throughout our region. The Refuge must continue to accommodate all of these visitors, which is why I’m working to help upgrade these facilities.
This is not only good for the Refuge and the visitor experience, but will ensure that the surrounding communities and businesses will continue to benefit from the tourism of the Refuge. Click here to read more on my effort.
Sediment monitoring of the Lower Cowlitz River
Yearly sediment monitoring work is necessary to ensure Cowlitz County communities are protected from severe flooding events resulting from the buildup of volcanic sediment from the 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens. I'm pressing to make sure this program is funded to help give residents in Cowlitz County peace-of-mind that their families, homes, and businesses will be safe from flooding. I'm continuing to add information on small business resources, COVID testing and vaccine locations, local health departments, unemployment benefits, and more on my COVID dedicated webpage: JHB.house.gov/coronavirus
