Herrera Beutler Secures Committee Approval for Safety Upgrades for Chehalis Recreation Park

$570,000 advanced in Appropriations Committee-approved spending plan

Congresswoman Jaime Herrera Beutler today announced she secured $570,000 to fund safety upgrades to the City of Chehalis Recreation Park in a spending plan advanced by the U.S. House Appropriations Committee. The project is supported by the City of Chehalis.

As a senior member of the Appropriations Committee, Herrera Beutler advocated for the inclusion of this community-requested priority in the FY23 Transportation, Housing and Urban Development and Related Agencies Subcommittee Appropriations bill. The bill now awaits approval from the full U.S. House of Representatives.

“The City of Chehalis has made this upgrade to its Recreation Park a priority because it will increase safety for folks using the Recreation Park and also support the surrounding homes and businesses. I was pleased to advocate for this use of taxpayer dollars that will provide measurable benefit to Lewis County residents,” Herrera Beutler said.

“The City of Chehalis appreciates Representative Herrera Beutler’s continuing support of the City’s effort to make Recreation Park a safe and enjoyable destination for those in and around Chehalis. As the popularity of the City’s new multi-use recreation facility continues to increase, the ability to build an additional parking lot will allow the city to meet the growing need for parking with safe paths to the park,Chehalis Mayor Tony Ketchum said.

“The funding for the additional parking lot will allow the City to provide 55 more parking spaces for visitors to Recreation Park. The additional parking will help minimize impacts on the surrounding neighborhood while creating a safer parking environment. We are thankful to Representative Herrera Beutler and her staff for their efforts to secure funding for this project,” Chehalis City Manager Jill Anderson said.

  • Funding would address a major safety concern for families attending events. Due to a lack of parking, people are choosing to park in unsafe locations surrounding the park that do not have proper surfacing, sidewalks, or designated crossings. Another concern is children running across and darting into traffic of a busy roadway that sits parallel to the park. The addition of the parking lot will improve the safety of thousands of park visitors each year. The neighboring businesses and homes that surround the park would also benefit from the added parking, as park visitors regularly park in their business parking lots and private parking spaces.
