Herrera Beutler Secures Federal Funds for Port of Longview Industrial Rail Expansion Project
$16 million RAISE Grant will help increase Port’s capacity & efficiency, expand Southwest Washington’s economic activity
Congresswoman Jaime Herrera Beutler (WA-03) today applauded news that the Port of Longview had secured a $16 million Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity (RAISE) grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation which will help complete the Port’s Industrial Rail Corridor Expansion (IRCE). The project will increase the Port of Longview’s cargo capacity to meet growing customer demands and expand economic opportunity in Southwest Washington.
As a senior member of the U.S. House Appropriations Committee, Herrera Beutler helped secure funding for this RAISE grant and worked with USDOT earlier this year, urging the grant be put in place to fund the Port of Longview’s infrastructure expansion.
The RAISE grant will be used to build upon the two track Industrial Rail Corridor by constructing a six-track bed adjacent to the current corridor, adding 8,500’ tracks and increasing the lengths of the existing two tracks from 7,500’ to 8,500’ to accommodate full-length unit trains. The project will double the size of the current corridor, helping to reduce congestion, increase efficiency, and provide space to add additional tracks in the future.
“Not only is the Port of Longview a major shipping gateway to the Columbia River that provides jobs in Cowlitz County, it also supports annual economic activity to the tune of nearly $3 billion across our region. I worked to secure this critical funding for the Port of Longview to help increase capacity to move cargo efficiently, which gets products on the shelves and allows hardworking residents to support their families,” Herrera Beutler said.
“We are fortunate to have a congressional delegation that is united in their commitment to Cowlitz County. We want to thank Senator Murray, Senator Cantwell, and Congresswoman Herrera Beutler for all their efforts to deliver this critical federal investment. This is a huge win for our community and will ensure the Port continues to serve as an economic driver in our region. From Senator Cantwell’s visit to the Port this summer to see the project firsthand along with her and Congresswoman Herrera Beutler’s personal advocacy to Secretary Buttigieg, this was truly a team effort to secure this game changing federal investment,” Allan Erickson, Commission President of the Port of Longview said.
