U.S. House Approves Herrera Beutler’s Bill to Protect Pregnant Workers
Pregnant Workers Fairness Act will ensure pregnant employees are given reasonable accommodations to protect their health in the workplace
Today, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the bipartisan Pregnant Workers Fairness Act, legislation introduced by Congresswoman Jaime Herrera Beutler (WA-03) to help pregnant workers have healthy and safe pregnancies while continuing to work.
H.R. 2694, the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act, would require employers to implement reasonable accommodations for pregnant workers to allow those women to continue working to provide for their families.
“As a mom who has had three kids while serving in Congress, I understand the balancing act for women who want to remain in the workplace while raising a family, and safeguard their health. The Pregnant Workers Fairness Act is an important step in that effort and will ensure pregnant workers receive reasonable accommodations at work like a bottle of water, an extra bathroom break, or even a stool to sit on at work.
“This bill is also good for our economy; with women making up over half of our nation’s workforce, it’s imperative that soon-to-be moms can continue to provide for their families and support America’s small businesses and employers – especially right now. I’m pleased the House approved this legislation, and I look forward to its swift passage in the Senate,” Herrera Beutler said.
Herrera Beutler has been a national and vocal advocate for the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act. In November 2019, she highlighted the bill’s approval by the U.S. House Education and Labor Committee, and spoke to CBS News in January on the importance of this piece of legislation.

H.R. 2694 passed the U.S. House by a bipartisan vote of 329 to 73, and now advances to the U.S. Senate for approval.
