Today, Congresswoman Jaime Herrera Beutler sent a letter formally pressing the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) to take action that would mitigate any complications, COVID or otherwise, that could delay implementation of her legislation to expand lethal sea lion removal in the Columbia River and its tributaries.

Congresswoman Jaime Herrera Beutler issued the following statement following the release of the draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) on the federal Columbia River System: “The Columbia River plays such an important role in so many aspects of our lives here in Southwest Washington. This draft Environmental Impact Statement provides a framework to continue producing renewable hydroelectric energy, productive salmon recovery efforts, flood risk management, and the reliable transportation of goods for our region. This EIS is the result of years of federal scientific review and collaboration with regional, state, local, and tribal stakeholders, and I look forward to a final record of decision this fall. Until then, I encourage the public to submit their comments to ensure their voice is heard.”

Congresswoman Jaime Herrera Beutler applauded the decision by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to protect the viability of earthquake early warning systems like ShakeAlert as they make changes to the Wireless Emergency Alert (WEA). The waiver issued by the FCC will ensure alerts issued by the ShakeAlert system will reach affected individuals’ cell phones in a timely manner, increasing their chances of being able to get to safety.

Reps. Herrera Beutler, Schrader Introduce Legislation to Extend Harvesting of Special Forest Products

U.S. Representatives Jaime Herrera Beutler (R-WA) and Kurt Schrader (D-OR) introduced a bill today to permanently reauthorize the U.S. Forest Service’s (USFS) Special Forest Products pilot program that allows the sustainable harvest of special forest products on lands in the National Forest System. The program allows the public to harvest natural forest resources for personal or commercial use; these special products include mushrooms, roots, seeds, Christmas trees and firewood, among others.
